The knight had lost his honour.

He knelt before the king…

Who looked down upon him for besmirching the royal name.

“A knight of my realm has a duty. A duty to do the right thing, for the right reason, at the right time,” said the king.

The knight had failed to fulfil his duty. First, he had gotten drunk on cider: the wrong thing. His choice to get drunk was to spite his captain who had put him on night watch: the wrong reason. Then, he fell asleep in a haystack on his way to his shift, and when he did eventually wake, he was four hours late for his watch: the wrong time.
